Ilya- after Georges Braque, 1979

This original proof print was created in 1979 by Zanders Paper for their 150th anniversary celebrating the collaboration between painter Georges Braque and master jeweler Heger de Löenfeld.  The 12 prints were reproductions of Braque's drawings and gouache paintings he made for Löenfeld who would then sculpt and carve them into adornments.

The gilt embossed print is on Chromolux paper.  It depicts a woman's profile in an undulating golden medallion floating in a field of black. The title, Ilya, is likely an alternative spelling of Ilia, the mortal mother of the twin founders of Rome: Romulus and Remus. This print was matched with the month of July.

In good condition. Housed in a hand painted off white wedge frame with uv glass.

Frame size: 16 3/4" x 26 7/8

Georges Braque (1882-1963) was a French artist who transformed the collective understanding of painting and pictorial space, leading two art movements: Fauvism and Cubism. Towards the end of his life he collaborated with the lapidary and jeweler Heger de Löenfeld; so closely and fluidly that Braque referred to him as a “continuation of my hand.” The collection was inspired by Greek mythology, metamorphosis and flight.
