A hand-carved tramp art box with a chip-carved decorative exterior. Built in layered rows of notched carving with a tiered lid featuring a small central knop.
The inside of the box is divided into two compartments. The lid has an incised inscription to the underside: “Made Ap 3rd 1902.” The base retains a factory stamp reading “Factory No 203 / Dist. W. VA,” suggesting the reuse of a cigar box, typical of early tramp art craft.
Tramp art of this period often transforms humble, readily available materials into decorative vernacular objects.
